A month after the birth of their son Zachery Levon, Elton John and David Furnish have revealed that sperm from both men was used in the conception of the child.

Elton and David have previously remained mum on the topic of who fathered their child, who was born via surrogate on Christmas Day last year, but in a recent statement David revealed that he and Elton 'both contributed' to the conception process.

The pair who wed in a civil union ceremony in 2005 underwent a surrogacy program in the Unites States last year, where their semen specimens were mixed and used to fertilize a previously selected egg. Such a procedure is illegal in the United Kingdom.

When asked who the biological father is, David says: "We both contributed. For the time being we don't have a clue. We look at him every day and at the moment he has Elton's nose and my hands.

"Neither of us cares. He's our child. The important thing is that he's healthy and happy and loved."

Elton was listed as Zachery's father on the birth certificate, while David was listed in the section usually reserved for the mother of the child. In situations involving gay couples, the parents can apply to have the birth certificate of their child re-issued as Parent 1 and Parent 2.

Of the birth, the couple told 'OK! Magazine' that Zachery 'shot out like a rocket,' with the obstetrician having to catch the infant in his arms.

Elton said: "Suddenly, at 2.15am on Christmas Day, we were woken up. They said, 'Quickly! The baby's coming!' We went in and stood behind the bed. Then the top of the head came out and David said, 'My God, there's the head!'

"Then he shot out like a rocket basically - so much so that the obstetrician sort of caught him! It was so dramatic and exciting; we didn't have time to get emotional. Like there he was, talk about fast!"

While David admits the couple wouldn't rule out having more children, they are more than content with one for the time being. "This is a big change in our life. We have to see how we cope and adapt with one child before we even consider a second," he said.

The pair is also planning to be 'hands on' parents, and won't be spoiling their son with material possessions, only love. Elton added to 'OK! Magazine': "I feed him. David feeds him. We change his nappies. I mean, it's hands on! We are on nappy patrol.

"I'm ready to have a child and lavish my love on our son and not spoil him but be there for him and advise him. We don't want to spoil him materially, although he's already been spoiled rotten by people buying him stuff! We just want to give him some wisdom."
