Mel Gibson dropped after 'Hangover' cast object

Published

Mel Gibson has been dropped from a planned sequel to the hit comedy "The Hangover" after its cast and crew objected.

The film's director Todd Phillips said in a statement that he wanted to cast the 54-year-old actor with anger management issues as a tattoo artist but that he did not have "the full support of my entire cast and crew".

Phillips said he and studio Warner Bros thought "Mel would have been great".

The decision follows the release of recordings of Gibson apparently threatening his ex-girlfriend.

"I realise film-making is a collaborative effort and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew," Phillips said.

A representative for Gibson did not comment.

"The Hangover" is about a bachelor party that does not go according to plan in Las Vegas. It made more than $467 million globally.

The sequel is due out next year. It will reunite Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha. This time the location for their latest mishap is set for Bangkok.

The role of tattoo artist was reported as being "pivotal'' to the plot and it is not known whether it will now be written out of the film.

Los Angeles police are investigating Gibson on suspicion of domestic abuse against ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his one-year-old daughter, while Grigorieva is being investigated over claims that she tried to extort money from Gibson.

The actor's next movie, the Jodie Foster-directed comedy ''Beaver,'' has seen its release date postponed by Summit Entertainment in the wake of his bitter split with his ex-girlfriend.
