Priyanka Chopra’s played a role of a lifetime in ‘Mary Kom’. The actress talks about her role, and the preparations that went in.

Mother and a fighter

“Most of the film is picked up from the real life of Mary Kom and for me the most difficult thing was to bring about that personality of Mary,’ said the actress.

“When you watch the film some of it is documented and some of which we have recreated. In the film there is a scene where Mary is a mother and she is in conflict. A scene like that was a completely new experience for me because I am not a mother and shot was a very tough moment for me to be a mother and a fighter. I think it was my greatest and most difficult role. I think for us it was a challenge.”

“I think what touched me most is that she is so real and she is a girl. She is a boxer who is tough in the boxing ring, but take her gloves off and she is always wearing nail paint which is her lucky charm. She is a girly girl and that is what I like about her. I tried not to make this into a Rocky Balboa and kept the role as her personality.”

Physical training

“For a woman it’s hard to get muscles like the way boys do. We used to shoot 15 hours and used to go to the gym after shoots, and train for three hours. The trainers have been like gods.”

If you have to give one solid punch who would it be?

“I punch people all the time. And anyway I don’t have just one person who I want to punch. There are a few people in this world who I want to beat up!”

Going bald!

“The first thing is that Mary went bald in her real life and that was pretty exciting for me in the first place. It was very challenging for every actor to know and realise what could have prompted something like that. And when you want to portray an emotion realistically, there is no apprehension.

Rebel without a cause

“I am a rebel without a cause. Successful people are ones that want to move ahead and this film is a story for everyone. The film is not about remaining in borders but breaking them. This film is about strength, balance, dedication and family and the youth will also learn a lot.”

Sports films being a trend

“If you want to compare films like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘Pan Singh Tomar’ to ‘Mary Kom’ and call it a trend, it will be very demeaning to a character and personality like Mary Kom. She is a legend in her own right. This film is the first in India on a woman sports star and it is very disrespectful to call Mary Kom being a part of a trend. She is a jewel of India.”

Muscles now

“There are no muscles now. The moment we finished shooting for the film, Zoya Akhtar’s film had to start and I had to lose all the muscles to look girly-girly. I completely play an opposite character in Zoya’s film and hence I went on a crash diet and lost my shape.”
