Palestinian teacher Hanan Al Hroub was declared the winner of $1 million Global Teacher Prize at a glittering ceremony on Sunday in Dubai.

Hanan Al Hroub was announced winner by Pope Francis in a televised speech at the Dubai-based Varkey Foundation's ceremony at Atlantis The Palm Dubai Hotel & Resort. She dedicated the prize to her country, Palestine, and all teachers in the world.
Now in its second year, the US$1 million award for teaching is the largest prize of its kind. The Global Teacher Prize was set up to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution while shining a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
The $1 million award for teaching is the largest prize of its kind and the event was attended by world leaders, politicians, dignitaries and several film stars.

Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek's presence heightened the excitement at the event which was also attended by several Hindi film stars.
