Palestinian teacher Hanan Al Hroub was declared the winner of $1 million Global Teacher Prize at a glittering ceremony on Sunday in Dubai.
Hanan Al Hroub was announced winner by Pope Francis in a televised speech at the Dubai-based Varkey Foundation's ceremony at Atlantis The Palm Dubai Hotel & Resort. She dedicated the prize to her country, Palestine, and all teachers in the world.
Now in its second year, the US$1 million award for teaching is the largest prize of its kind. The Global Teacher Prize was set up to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution while shining a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.

Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek's presence heightened the excitement at the event which was also attended by several Hindi film stars.
Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra brought in some Bollywood flavour during the ceremony.
Academy award winner Matthew McConaughey walked the red carpet with his beautiful wife Camila Alves before joining Pakistani singer/actor Ali Zafar on stage.
It seems the crowd enjoyed as Parineeti Chopra showed McConaughey a few Bollywood moves as Zafar belted out 'Khaike Paan Banaraswala'.
The stars took turn to speak about the importance of teachers in our society and the need to encourage them for a better world.
Korean-American singer Eric Nam and Moroccan singer Hatim Ammor closed the evening with a concert.
