Colombo - An unfortunate incident took  place when two sisters, aged 4 and 8, went to fetch water, leading to the death of the younger one, who fell through the elevator shaft from the 11th floor of Colombo’s tallest building.

The 4-year-old girl fell to her death from an apartment of the Havelock City Apartment Complex at Wellawatta, police said.

They said the child succumbed to her injuries on being admitted to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.

Police said the child was resident of Mabola and she had come to the Wellawatta complex, where the sister of the child's mother was residing, on the 11th floor.

According to the initial investigations, the child had been playing with her mother and her sister on the second floor of the building. The child wanted a drink of water. The sister accompanied her to the 11th floor in the lift in order to get the water, asking the younger sister hold on to the elevator button till she brought it.

When the sister returned the child had fallen through the elevator shaft. Police believe that the lift door opened and the lift moved leading to the child’s fall.
