Asian drug smuggler sentenced to death

An Abu Dhabi criminal court sentenced an Asian man to death after he was convicted of trying to smuggle nearly 4.2 kg of heroin into the UAE.

Customs authorities at Abu Dhabi airport had suspected the man as he looked confused when he reached the search lounge on arrival from his home country.

After searching his bags, they found the stuff concealed expertly in plastic bags in a secret chamber of one bag.

The defendant, who was not identified, told court he agreed to bring the drugs to a European man in the UAE in return for Dh100,000.

Once endorsed by the President, executions in the UAE, a target of international narcotics gags, are carried out by a firing squad.
