New signboards, warning pedestrians against crossing over at undesignated areas, have come up in many parts of Dubai’s Al Nahda.

'Fine for jaywalking Dh200', it reads.

These are placed across many points that record high pedestrian traffic.

A new pedestrian over bridge on Amman Street in Dubai’s Al Nahda helps cross-emirate commuters immensely.

“These signs just help spread the awareness,” said Candy, a resident of Al Safa building in the area.

“Now, there’s no more excuses. People just have to follow the rules. And, it’s for their own safety,” she adds.

This stretch in Al Nahda is popular because it sits on the Sharjah-Dubai border and many residents cross over to save on the Dh20 cross-emirate cab fare, and to reduce their daily commute considerably.

Until now, the 2km stretch in Dubai’s Al Nahda 1 that runs parallel to the Sharjah border, near Sahara Centre, had only a pedestrian crossing near the NMC traffic signal.

The entire length of the Amman Street has been fenced so that pedestrians stick to using the footbridge.

The Dubai Police also tweeted the need for responsible road behaviour with a poster, and a tweet, reading, “To cross the road safely, cross in pedestrian lane properly.#CrossSafely”

Emirates24|7 has been tracking the situation in Al Nahda and have been flagging the need for a pedestrian crossing in the area.
