UK expats in the UAE are encouraged to cast their vote in the UK Parliamentary General Elections online, in order to have their voice heard from abroad.

This year is the first year voters can register online, a service which has already been made available in anticipation of Election Day on May 7, 2015.

The Electoral Commission hopes that the new online process will encourage more UK nationals living overseas to register to take part in elections from overseas.

“A lot of people aren’t aware that it’s possible to register as an overseas voter for the General Election.
“We need to challenge the misconception that once you’ve moved overseas you can’t take part. Many people can and now it’s easier than ever to take the first step by registering online,” Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission said.

To register to vote, UK citizens should visit https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

In order to be eligible for registration, the UK citizen must have previously been registered in a UK constituency within the last fifteen years.

A national insurance number will be asked upon registration, in addition to personal details relating to the voter’s home address or location where last voted in the UK. The vote will be cast in this area.
Estimates show that there may be as many as 5.5 million UK nationals living overseas, but there are fewer than 20,000 currently on the electoral register.

UK nationals in the UAE have been around 100,000 for the past years.
