Camera traps visitor who groped woman in lift

A Saudi visitor allegedly groped his Egyptian neighbour and sought sex with her for Dh2,000 while the two were in the lift of a building, the Dubai Criminal Court heard. However, the visitor claimed she had asked him for Dh100.

On May 22, the 28-year-old victim entered the lift of the building where she lived in Muraqqabat after returning from work at around 9.45pm. As she entered the lift, he too entered behind her, saying “Excuse me.”

“I pressed the button for the first floor where I stayed. In the lift, he asked me where am I from. I told him I am Egyptian. Suddenly, he put his arm around my waist. I shouted at him ‘Are you crazy? What are you up to?’

“The lift had reached the first floor and I got out. He got out too. I stopped, turned back to him and asked, ‘What are you doing?’ Pointing at his pocket, he said ‘Come with me and I will give you 2,000 riyals’. I told him ‘You are impolite’ and waited for a lift to go down. When the lift opened, he got into it, but I did not and waited for the other lift. He went up to the fourth floor and I went down the building and reported the incident to the police,” she testified.

Police arrested FM, 38 who claimed that the woman had asked him for Dh100. When he was shown camera footage that showed him trying to put his arm around her waist, he claimed that he was just putting his palm on her shoulder when she was stepping out of the lift.

However, Criminal Evidences reported that the recording showed the man trying to put his arm around the woman’s waist and that he followed her in the building’s corridor.

FM is accused of molesting a woman and encouraging a woman to practice prostitution.

The Court will issue its verdict on October 6.
