Sony is working on releasing a new upgraded version of PlayStation 4 that would have improved graphics and 4K resolution.

Several reports on the web are speculating about the new release, especially since Sony announced that its PlayStation VR would start rolling out in retail stores starting October this year.

A gaming blog Giantbomb quoting several sources is reporting that the new upgraded gaming console will be called Neo. It also adds that new games coming out starting October 2016 should have two different modes - a base mode and a Neo mode.

According to it, the Neo will spot an improved GPU, a higher clock speed, memory and bandwidth. The report also states that the Neo could be priced at around $399.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has dropped the price of the Xbox One to $299.

Giving additional details the report notes that while the original PS4  runs on 8 Core 1.6GHz processor, the Neo would come with an upgraded 8 Core 2.1GHz processor. The new will also sport a n improved AMD GPU at 36CUs and 911MHz compared to 18CU and 800MHz of PS4. the report also adds that  the upgraded device will support 4K image output.

The possibility of Sony introducing an upgrade to PS4 have been in the news for a few months now and comes amidst news that it has oversold rival Xbox One in March sales across the United States.

If true, this would be the first time Sony would be enhancing the gaming console within three years with a mid-generation upgrade. The news comes amidst similar rumours about a possible upgrade to Microsoft Xbox One with a Xbox 1.5 and Nintendo's NX.

The latter has officially confirmed that it is working a new system that will be a successor to Wii U.

Meanwhile, Sony's decision could also be aimed at equipping the console and games for its new PlayStation VR – a device that will take on rivals such as Facebook’s Oculus Rift and HTC Vive – will start selling from October.

More than 230 developers and publishers are working on PS VR software titles totaling more than 160. It is expected that at least 50 of those titles would launch by the end of this year.
