A Dubai court has sentenced a policeman to three months in jail for stealing a mobile phone that belonged to a detainee.
The 19-year-old policeman identified as ME stole the handset from a safety box used to keep personal items of detainees checked in to face cases.
The Dubai Criminal Court also ordered the guilty policeman to pay a fine of Dh2,000.
Prosecution had earlier argued that the policeman had stolen the phone that belonged to a Moroccan detained to be interrogated.
Another policeman, an Omani national, testified that nothing was missing from the safety box when he checked it it in the morning of the day of the incident. But around mid-day, when his superior officer asked him to get the Moroccan detainee's phone, the handset of the Moroccan detainee was was gone.
It was later found with ME who was subsequently placed under arrest for theft.
