Egyptian police raided a remote farm and seized more than 1,200 donkey prepared for slaughtering after reports that the farm owner had supplied donkey meat to the local market many times, an Egyptian newspaper reported on Thursday.

Police stormed the farm in the central town of Faiyum after reports by local residents that trucks loaded with large refrigerators converge on the farm daily before moving to an unspecified location, the Arabic language daily Al Wafd said.

Police seized more than 1,200 donkeys prepared for slaughtering and many others which were already slaughtered, it said.

It quoted police sources as saying the farm is owned by a local 45-year-old businessman identified as Ahmed and that an average 90 donkeys are slaughtered every day and supplied to the market.

“The owner of the farm had hired eight skilled butchers to manage is his farm and prepare the donkey meat…they confessed that large quantities of donkey meat had been supplied to the local market without the buyers’ knowledge,” it said.
