Emirates Road at night is the most dangerous place in Dubai

A total of 3,576 road accidents in Dubai left 2,659 people injured and 225 dead in 2009, statistics released by Dubai Police reveal.

According to the stats, there were 194 deadly accidents in Dubai in 2009, accounting for 225 deaths on the road.

The dead included 87 drivers, 60 passengers and 78 pedestrians.

Emirates Road tops the list of the ten most dangerous sites accounting for the highest accidental deaths in Dubai, Dubai Police stats show.

According to the numbers, Emirates Road accounted for 25 accidents in 2009, or 13 per cent of all traffic accidents in which a death occurred in the year, leaving 26 people dead in such accidents.

There were 14 accidents (which involved death) during the night and 11 during the day on Emirates Road, the highest in Dubai.

The second most dangerous site in 2009 was the Dubai Transit Road, which accounted for 17 dead in 13 accidents, closely followed by the Jabel Ali-Al Habab Road (16 dead in 6 accidents).

Dubai Police stats also reveal that the number of Indian nationals dead in accidents on Dubai roads last year stood at 83, more than a third of all such deaths in the emirate. A total of 709 Indian nationals were injured in accidents, over a quarter of all injured, data shows.

Pakistani nationals (38 deaths and 429 injured) were the next most vulnerable sub-set on Dubai roads, followed by local Emiratis (22 deaths and 323 injured).

Overall, people in the 27-35 age-group were the most at risk, with 69 victims in this age-group succumbing to the accidents, followed by 50 people in the 18-26 age-group.

Data also showed that the number of accidents in the second half of the year was much lower than the first half.

There were 1,943 accidents in the first six months of 2009, which declined by 16 per cent to 1,633 accidents in the next six months.
