277 pedestrians have been fined Dh200 each for crossing the road in unmarked places since the beginning of January by Ajman Police.
Police said the fine was imposed as part of a pedestrian’s safety awareness campaign which began in January and which will continue till March-end.
Traffic patrols have been distributing leaflets in Arabic, English and Urdu languages to pedestrians which offer advice on how to avoid road accidents.
The campaign includes lectures for students of schools in Ajman Educational Zone.
Colonel Ali Hamid Almuseiba, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department of Ajman Police, said: "The campaign aims to raise awareness of all road users, especially pedestrians. One of the main reasons for road accidents is pedestrians dashing across streets at undesignated places.”
