A total of 352 people got trapped in vehicles in traffic accidents last year, according to a top official, who added that these accidents also killed 52 people.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Major Khalid Al Hammadi, Acting Director General of Dubai Police Search and Rescue Department, and Head of Special Task Force in Dubai Police said that they had to deal with 191 traffic accidents, in which a total of 352 people got trapped.

“We are called only in cases where there are people trapped in vehicles. Our job is to release the trapped persons and try our best to save their lives. When we arrive at an accident scene, first of all we check if the trapped persons are alive or not, and for how long they can survive in the vehicle.”

He added that they are always supported by ambulance teams and paramedics, who help them in saving the trapped persons' lives.

Major Al Hammadi added that of the 352 cases they handled last year, 109 suffered from major injuries, 119 from medium injuries and 72 sustained minor injuries.

“November was the busiest month as we had to deal with 24 such traffic accidents.”

He added that after arriving at an accident spot, they do their best to save trapped people’s lives.

“It is a difficult situation where we have to act fast, and at the same time take it easy on the trapped persons. We have to deal with people who cry out in pain, and are most of the time bleeding. But at the same time, we try to do our job in the best way to save their lives. It is a difficult situation. However, after saving these lives, it is an amazing feeling of satisfaction which words cannot express.”

He also advised people who arrive at an accident scene before the police or ambulance to be careful and not take people out of the vehicles.

“This is very serious as in many cases the person might have internal fractures or injuries, and if they are moved in an unprofessional way, they can end up with internal bleeding, disability or even death.”
