The General Department of Dubai Traffic Police released figures to the media on Sunday for the first half of the year that would suggest a harsh assessment of Dubai’s driving habits.

According to a report published in Al Emarat Al Youm, there were more than one million (1,222,111) violations recorded during the first half of this year.

While, true to form, speeding violations topped the list, it is the number of red-light and dangerous driving offences recorded that are worrying officials.

Lt Colonel Saif Mohair Al Mazroui, Acting Director of the Department was quoted as saying, “There were over 8,000 red-light violations, most of them in absentia, recorded by cameras at  intersections. The total number of dangerous driving offenses were 2,414. This violation leads to serious accidents, such as the incident recently in Al Shindagha tunnel, where a man from a GCC country was driving a car against flow of traffic because he was under the influence of alcohol. He killed a woman and wounded several others.

Speeding violations accounted for up to 50 per cent of overall offences. Most violated the limit by between 21 and 30 km per hour.

Of the total violations, 1.03 million were issued in absentia, compared with 219,506 violations where the violator was present.

There were 408 violations for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 12,250 violations of not renewing the driver's licence.

Seat-belt violations were about 45,042, most of them in absentia.
