Abu Dhabi foiled more than 13,000 smuggle cases in 2014, involving 48 infiltrations by illegal migrants and large quantities of drugs, a newspaper reported on Monday.

Customs authorities at border points and at airports and ports foiled the 13,705 smuggling attempts in coordination with police and other concerned authorities, said Mohammed Al Hamli, acting director of the customs department.

He told the semi-official daily 'Al Ittihad' that the cases involved 48 attempts by illegal migrants to sneak into the UAE, and the seizure of more than 26,000 drug pills and large quantities of heroin, cocaine, hashish and other narcotics.
