Abu Dhabi sport star jailed one year for raping boy

An Abu Dhabi court sentenced a local ‘sport star’ to one year in prison after he was convicted of raping a 12-year-old boy by taking advantage of his celebrity.

The Arabic language daily ‘Al Bayan’ said the defendant used messenger service on his BlackBerry phone to seduce the boy and lead him to an isolated place.

“The court found him guilty of rape charge…it accused him of using his celebrity status to influence the victim, who is a strong fan of the defendant,” the paper said.

It said a Court of First Instance had sentenced the unnamed man to two years in prison, prompting him to appeal. He was sentenced by an appeals court to three years in jail before another appeals court decided to jail him one year.

The paper did not mention what sport the defendant is involved.
