Abu Dhabi traffic police have started to replace old plates for all vehicles in the emirate as part of an ongoing development plan prompted by a sharp rise in the number of vehicles, press reports said on Saturday.

Car owners will be required to replace their number plates when they renew their vehicle registration or have their present plates damaged or lost. “Drivers replacing their plates will be given the same number and the replacement is in return for a token fee,” said Lt Colonel Suhail Saeed Al Khaily, director of the vehicle licensing section at the Abu Dhabi police.

He said the licensing department had replaced old plates for 5,705 cars over the past two weeks, adding that the new plates are produced at the department and in Musaffah, Bani Yas, Al Ain, Samha and the Western region.
