An Asian man who had broken residency rules and accumulated nearly Dh400,000 in overstay fines was pardoned and allowed to leave the UAE under a two-month general amnesty announced for immigration violators.

Immigration officials said the man had dodged authorities and his sponsor for nearly 12 years before he decided to benefit from the amnesty and leave the country.

“He was relieved from paying the fines that he had accumulated since 2000 and allowed to leave the country,” said Lt Colonel Khalid bin Hudaiba, acting director general of the residency and foreigners’ affairs department in Umm Al Quwain.

Quoted by the semi official daily Alittihad, he said the man had absconded from his sponsor and worked for a contracting company in the emirate.

“He came to the relevant centre and submitted his papers…he was relieved from his overstay fines and residence renewal fees and allowed to leave without any problem.”
