Asians key victims of car accidents

Road accidents killed 413 people in Abu Dhabi in four years and nearly 70 per cent of them were non-Arab Asians, according to police
statistics.

Around 25 per cent of the accidents during 2007-2010 occurred during the peak hours between 6.00 pm and 9.00 pm and 18 per cent between 6.00 and 9.00 am, showed the figures published in the Arabic language
daily 'Al Bayan'.

“Over the past four years, 413 people died as a result of road accidents…Asians accounted for nearly 70 per cent of the victims,” the
report said.

It showed 142 road mishaps took place in the first quarter of 2011, resulting in the death of 24 people and injury of 118. This compares
with 168 accidents in the first quarter of 2010, when 32 people were killed and 138 were injured.

A breakdown showed the rate of deaths caused by road accidents in Abu Dhabi has decline over the past few years, standing at 17.4 per
100,000 in 2007, 13.5 per 100,000 in 2009, 13.3 per 100,000 in 2009 and 12 per 100,000 in 2010.

The report also showed more than 40 per cent of the deadly accidents over the past four years were caused by negligence and carelessness, while 20 per cent were caused by excessive speed and one per cent by jumping the red lights.
