Crane collapse kills two in Dubai’s Al Quoz

Two people were killed and one was seriously injured when a massive crane installed wrongly collapsed on them at a work site in Quoz industrial area in Dubai, a newspaper reported on Monday.

Scores of workers and passers by had crowded the three-level building under maintenance by a company despite warnings to keep away from the site.

“The crane was fitted in the wrong way…it then collapsed on people standing near the building,…two were killed and one was seriously injured,” Emirat Alyoum daily said, quoting Bur Dubai police station chief, Colonel Ali Ghanim.

He said those responsible for the installation of the cane were detained for interrogation.

Preacher held for harassing married woman

Saudi Arabia’s religious police arrested a mosque Imam (preacher) for harassing a married woman by sending texts to her mobile phone asking her for a date.

The woman’s husband reported the Saudi preacher to the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which sent its men to the mosque in the southern province of Jazan and arrested him.

Police found the woman’s photograph and several messages sent to her from the preacher’s mobile phone, Sharq newspaper reported.ends

Teen girl held for wearing men’s clothes

Kuwaiti police arrested a teenage local girl for wearing traditional men’s clothes that triggered a fight in a major shopping mall in the capital.

Police rushed to the mall after receiving calls a fight had erupted inside the building and that two shops had been damaged.

“Police arrested those involved and an 18-year-old girl wearing dishdaha, ghutra (head cover) and black glasses,” Alanba daily said.

It quoted police as saying the scuffle broke out after a group of young men tried to stop other men from harassing the girl. “Security sources said police detained the girl to question her about the reasons for wearing men’s clothes.”

Man tries to end life after lover’s marriage

A Sri Lankan man in Kuwait was told his girl friend at home had married and that he should look for some one else. His first reaction was that he rushed to the kitchen, got a knife and stabbed himself in the stomach.

Police rushed to the man’s house after receiving a call from neighbours that a man has attempted a suicide.

“The man was taken to the intensive care unit and doctors said he would live,” the Kuwaiti Arabic language daily Alwatan said.

Asian couple on trial for adultery

An Asian man and a married woman are on trial in Abu Dhabi for committing adultery that led to the woman’s pregnancy.

The unnamed man confessed in court that he had an affair with the Asian woman but that he is not married and was not sure if the infant is his.

“The woman confessed to adultery but then retracted her statement…she later confessed although she knows that such a crime is punishable by stoning to death,” the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej said.

It said the woman told court that she is pregnant in her second month and that her lover is the baby’s father. The court adjourned hearings to June 24.

In Kuwait, don’t defy the police

A Kuwaiti driver who was committed a traffic offence in a busy area in the oil-rich Gulf emirate was stopped by the police and given a ticket.

Taking it as an insult, the defiant young man pressed hard on the accelerator, screeched his car tyres and drove away fast.

“The police themselves took this as an insult…they chased him, gave him another ticket and impounded his car,” Alwatan daily said.
