UAE authorities have repeated a warning to shops against selling energy drinks to persons below 18 years of age, saying violators would be fined Dh100,000.

“We call on all shops and other outlets to abide by the law which bans the sale of energy drinks to persons below 18 years,” said Hashim Al Nuaimi, director of the consumer protection division at the ministry of economy.

“Those who are caught violating this law will be fined Dh100,000… our inspectors will make random visits to shops to ensure compliance.”

Hashim, who spoke during a meeting with dealers in Fujairah, said the ministry took that decision after reports showed heavy consumption of energy drinks poses a threat to human health, mainly to minors.
