A man from another Gulf country waited for his sister and other members of the family to go to bed at their house in Abu Dhabi, woke up his 12-year-old niece and took her to a separate room where he raped her while he was drunk.

The man denied in court he raped his niece but the judge found him guilty after a testimony by the little girl and her housemaid and a medical report showing she had been raped.

Newspapers said the criminal court on Monday found that the unnamed defendant committed his crime under the influence of alcohol and that the rape had not led to the loss of the girl’s virginity. It issued a reduced sentence of 10 years in prison, fined the defendant Dh22,000 and ordered him to pay Dh20,000 damages to the girl.

The court was told that the man threatened his niece not to tell anybody about what happened and that she promised him not to do so.

Once he left her home, the girl hurried to her mother and told her about her uncle. In the morning, her mother rushed her to hospital, where she was told the girl was raped.

“A medical report presented in court showed the girl would soon recover from the physical damage caused by the rape…hence the judge issued a reduced sentence,” the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej said.

Driver flees with pipe after filling petrol at pump

An Asian man drove into a petrol pump in Ras Al Khaimah and asked the worker to put Dh50 worth of petrol into his car tank.

Once the tank was filled, the driver started the engine and drove away, neat realizing the petrol pipe was still stuck inside his car tank.

Shocked petrol station workers managed to take that car number and gave it to the police, who later arrested the “petrol thief”, according to Alkhaleej newspaper.

It said the man would be sentenced on Tuesday on charges of stealing petrol and damaging public property.
