There is growing interest among UAE citizens and residents in using their Emirates ID card to pass through the electronic gates at Dubai Airport.

The number of travellers who made use of this facility rose from 1,589,000 in 2012 to 1,765,000 in 2013.

According to Colonel Khaled Nasser Al Razzuqi of the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD), “This service allows for UAE nationals and residents who are nationals of 32 countries to use the e-gates at Dubai Airport with their Emirates ID cards.”

Col. Razzuqi asked Emirates ID card holders wishing to avail of this facility to activate their cards through Eida’s service centres or DNRD offices in all airports in UAE or at DNRD centres in the Dnata building on Sheikh Zayed Road and in Deira, Abu Hail, Dubai Media City, Dubai International Financial Centre and Jebel Ali Free Zone.

This can be done at the DNRD office in the Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in Abu Dhabi.

An Eida official said travellers can reduce the time spent at the airport’s immigration counter by using their activated Emirates ID cards instead of their passports at  the airport’s immigration counter.

UAE residents can activate their cards at the service centres by producing their valid Emirates ID card, passport valid for not less than six months with a valid residence visa.

He said Emirates ID cards are designed to international standards to combat fraud and counterfeiting.
