Dubai Cassation Court's verdict out: Death penalty for man who slaughtered prostitute

The Dubai Cassation Court turned down an appeal by a 29-year-old Pakistani who was given the death penalty by the Courts of First Instance and Appeal for slaughtering a prostitute and confirmed his death sentence.

AKB was convicted guilty of premeditatedly slitting thrice the throat of a prostitute from Uzbekistan and stealing Dh200 and two mobile phones from her handbag before heading to a mosque to perform the noon prayer.

The accused pleaded not guilty and contended that he did not intend to kill her.

According to the records, the convict had the intention to kill the woman as he especially bought a knife, went to the victim’s house where he slit her neck trice and without any having any feeling of guilty he went to the mosque and performed the noon prayer.

The accused admitted to investigators that he had sex with the woman for Dh100. Then she offered him alcohol. When he was returning home, he found that Dh6,000 was missing from his pocket.

“I talked to her, trying to persuade her to give me back my money but she repeatedly refused. I thought of buying a knife to threaten her to give the money back to me. I went to her flat and asked her to give back the amount, telling her that I am a poor man. When she refused, I became very angry, killed her, stole her money and mobiles and then left the flat,” he told investigators.

The Prosecution had asked the Court to award the death penalty to the accused.

The lawyer who was appointed by the Court claimed that his client did not have the strength to kill the Uzbek woman.

“It would have been impossible for my client, who is short and skinny, to have killed such an oversized woman. He did not have any intention to steal or kill the victim. She was a sex worker. My client went to her flat and he did not even have sex with her. She stole his Dh6,000 and the money which he was accused of stealing belonged to him. It is not a premeditated murder but rather a beating which led to death,” the lawyer argued.

The Criminal Court of First Instance awarded the death penalty to the accused.

AKB appealed the verdict and, while the case being heard, he submitted a waiver he had obtained from the victim’s parents.

Despite that, the Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence last December.

On Monday, the Court of Cassation also upheld the death penalty.
