Dubai has an active population of more than 2.87 million during the day, statistics from Dubai Statistics Centre (DSC) website show. According to data from the official statistics centre, active population during the day in the first quarter of the year was 2,870,668.

At the same time, data on the website shows that Dubai’s population crossed the 1.85-million mark last week. Population in the emirate has grown to more than 1,850,595 residents, up from 1,707,000 at the end of Q2 2009, indicating an additional 143,000 residents, or a growth of 8.4 per cent in the past 13 months.

This shows that, during the average working day, more than a million people attend Dubai on a daily basis. The active population swells by more 55 per cent when the number of tourists, sailors and workers in government as well as private sector residing outside Dubai is taken into consideration.

On an average, there were 21,810 guests in Dubai hotels and hotel apartments every day during Q1 2010, data shows. With the UAE’s total population at 8.19 million, it means that more than a third (about 35 per cent) of all UAE residents are in Dubai during the day.

Dubai continues to add more than 10,000 residents per month, data shows. This data is in stark contrast with earlier estimates by external agencies that Dubai's population would shrink as the emirate’s real estate and construction sectors suffered a slowdown.

Analysts now highlight that the increasing affordability and availability of residential accommodation in the emirate has meant that Dubai’s population has continued to swell.
