Dubai added nearly 100,000 people to its population through 2011, indicating a post-crisis recovery that seems to be enticing investors, tourists and job seekers.

From 1.905 million at the end of 2010, the population of the Gulf’s commercial, business and tourism hub swelled to 2.003 million at the end of 2011.

This means Dubai’s population grew by around 5.1 per cent, almost triple the average global growth rate. Dubai’s population crossed the two million mark for the first time at the end of 2011 and maintained that level in the following weeks to peak at 2.016 million on Tuesday, according to Dubai’s government statistics centre.

At that level, Dubai accounted for nearly a quarter of the UAE’s total population of 8.2 million and the majority of them are expatriates. The report showed the emirate’s population reached 1.929 million at the end of the first quarter of 2011 and continued its steady growth to rise to 1.953 million at the end of the first half. It then grew to 1.978 million at the end of the third quarter before gaining 25,000 in the fourth quarter.

A breakdown showed males stood at 1.536 million at the end of 2011 and females at 467,000. It also showed Dubai becomes overpopulated during peak hours with the number of active individuals during the day reaching 3,02 million.
