Dubai will soon see the provision of disabled-friendly parks, as Dubai Municipality has announced its plan to make parks throughout the city more suitable for people with special needs.

The project includes all theme parks and parks in residential areas in Dubai.

Special equipment, dedicated rides, smooth floors and free wheelchairs will guarantee that play areas are accessible to both the disabled visitors and their peers, explained Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality.

He added that the dedicated play areas would provide accessibility for the disabled without the help of others and prohibit non-disabled from using the same equipment.  Administrators and inspectors will be present to enforce the rules.

Entertainment is one of the disciplines known in the field of treatment and rehabilitation of the disabled and helps the disabled to cope with the loss of certain abilities, while it involves this group of society in physical and social activities, said Lootah.

Activities like these help in developing their interests in activities that fit their current abilities, he added.

The director explained that while the focus had first been on improving the disabled-friendliness of public buildings, streets and markets it was now time to concentrate on parks.

Works on the project will start in October this year and is expected to be completed within two years.
