A private hospital in Dubai locked up quadruplets and refused to hand them over to their Arab mother after she could not afford paying a bill of nearly Dh500,000.

But the hospital was later forced to hand them over to their mother at police request and after the sum was donated by an unknown person.

The mother had to shuttle daily between her home in Ajman and Dubai to feed her babies before she decided to resort to the police.

Al Bayan newspaper said the Dubai police’s human rights division intervened in the dispute and persuaded the hospital to hand the babies over to their mother. A ‘benevolent’ person later paid the whole bill to the hospital, it said, quoting Brigadier Mohammed Al Murr, director of the human rights division.

The unnamed woman had given birth to quintuplets but one of them died just after delivery at that hospital.
