More than 12,000 residents are expected to congregate in Dubai’s Zabeel Park this Friday (June 12) between 6.30pm and 9.30pm to participate in the first edition of International Yoga Day.
According to the UN General Assembly’s recent resolution, the International Yoga Day falls on June 21 globally, but Dubai will host the event earlier, prior to the holy month of Ramadan.
Residents can register by logging onto www.friendsofyogaglobal.org or by registering at a counter set up at Zabeel Park on June 12. The yoga session is charted for 40 minutes.
Hosted by Dubai Municipality, in coordination with Friends of Yoga, the event aims to encourage more people and communities to practice yoga and lead a healthier lifestyle.
Mohammed Hassan Al Fardan, Director of Parks and Horticulture Department at Dubai Municipality, said: “We are extremely pleased to celebrate the International Day of Yoga in Dubai, as this would help Dubai position itself on the global yoga map. The civic authority is always keen on promoting a fitness culture among residents.”
KB Madhavan, Founder of Friends of Yoga, said: “We are expecting thousands of people from all walks of life to participate in the event, which promotes the 5,000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice that aims to transform body and mind.”
A number of activities have been lined up to observe the day, with the municipality offering free entrance to the park in the evenings for those interested in learning yoga.
The civic body has made extensive arrangements to ensure that over 3,000 people can practice yoga at the park.
