The sixth session of the international Emirates Photography Competition was launched on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.

The competition is organised annually by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach) with an aim to develop photography in the UAE by nurturing the talented photographers and supporting professionals. EPC intends to achieve this through specialised workshops, interactive meetings, seminars and holding both solo and collective exhibitions inside and outside the country.

Abdulla Al Ameri, Director of Culture and Arts at Adach, launched the sixth session of the competition in a press conference held yesterday at the National Theatre in Abu Dhabi.

Al Ameri said: "The Emirates Photography Competition has proved, year after year, that a photo is part of human history and memory. The Competition is extremely creative; each session offers something new and innovative, spreading its message far and wide. The Competition enjoys international credibility, in terms of membership and the partnerships it enjoys with leading photographic associations and societies the world over".

He noted that "the success of Emirati photographers Omar Abdel Rahman Al Za'abi and Nasser Al Haji, who won the UAE Award during its fifth session in 2010, is an indication of how this Competition has promoted the cause of national talent. The sixth session, which will take place in 2011, showcases these successes. The Competition includes educational workshops and other artistic activities. These include two workshops, one entitled "Silent Nature in the Art of Photography", which is supervised by professional photographer Mohammed Shabib from Saudi Arabia, and the second entitled "The Art of Conceptual Photos in Photography", which is to be presented by leading US photographer Misha Gordin".

Al Ameri also pointed that the establishment of the Photographers Council in Abu Dhabi has opened the door for all talented individuals in the country.

Bader Al Nomani, Director of the Emirates Photography Competition, said "The main theme this year is "Black and White through Creative Eyes". The Competition will celebrate the role played by one of the most important photographers in the world, who has worked tirelessly to establish the role of modern photography; namely Ansel Adams".

Al Nomani said "The Competition was originally only focused on the works of UAE photographers.

It progressed to focus on photographers from the Gulf States and the Arab World during its third and fourth sessions until, years after its inception, the Competition became international last year. It enjoys the support of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP), which is backing the Competition for the second year in a row. The Competition was also delighted to welcome the membership of the American Society of Photography this year".

In the end of the press conference Abdulla Al Ameri handed the first certificates given by FIAP for four creative photographers in UAE.
