The landmark opening of the Emirates Road extension took place on Tuesday, with the UAE’s Ministry of Infrastructure Development opening the new highway that will connect from Al Oqron in Umm Al Quwain up to Martyrs Road in Ras Al Khaimah.

The 16km stretch, which comprises two lanes in each direction – with a  possibility of adding a third lane in the future – was constructed at a cost of Dh142 million, as revealed by the MoID last month.

Work on the project began in the beginning of April 2014, and lasted 24 months.

The manager of the Roads Department in the MoID stated the road would serve as an important addition to the network of the Federal roads that connect the north of the country to the south.

The Emirates Road extension connects Al Oqron in UAQ through the intersection of a bridge, which runs parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from the east and towards RAK, down to the path of Martyrs Road; this federal road will provide an alternative traffic route to the northern emirate.

The ministry had earlier stated it would transfer the movement of trucks entirely from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to this new road, which will be linked with the RAK Ring Road in future.

Rest areas for the trucks will also be erected on the side of the road.
