A 37-year-old Emirati man has been in coma in Sharjah Hospital for nearly seven years after suffering from serious injuries in a road accident in Dhaid.

The man was admitted to hospital when he was 30 years old just after he was involved in a car mishap on Dhaid road, the Arabic language daily ‘Al Ittihad’ said.

“He has been lying in coma at the hospital for nearly seven years after his breathing system stopped and his brain was badly damaged in the accident,” the paper said, quoting a statement by the hospital’s management.

It said the patient has been kept alive on a support machine and that he has remained unconscious all these years despite several treatment trips abroad.

“This is a very difficult condition…what he needs now is continuous nursing and clinical care so he will not suffer from any bacterial complications or clinical ulcers associated with being on the bed for a long time,” the statement said, adding that his family members visit him almost daily and are very upset about his condition.
