Fake goods worth Dh5,543,254 seized
Counterfeit goods worth Dh5,543,254 were seized by the anti-commercial fraud department of Dubai Police last year, according to a 'Al Bayan' report.
Major Salah Bu Aseeba, Director, Anti-Economic Crimes Department, said commercial fraud and intellectual property rights violation are the most common.
There are hordes of 'branded' accessories such as women's handbags and sunglasses in the market that are fake, he added.
Last year 107 cases of commercial fraud were reported against 88 in 2009.
While, number of violations of intellectual property rights hit 124 up from 140 in 2009.
The increase in number is also attributed to the intensified campaign and increased awareness among the public.
However, no fraud in medicines have been found, Major Aseeba said. The credit for this goes to the combined efforts of the Ministry of Health, Dubai Economic Department as well as Dubai Municipality.
