Four warehouses in Sharjah Industrial Area 6 were gutted in a massive fire that broke out late on Sunday night.

The warehouses were used to store electrical cables and kitchen equipment, reported 'The National'.

The blaze was brought under control by 3am. It took about 120 firemen 10 fire engines to douse the fire. Firefighters from Dubai, Ajman and Sharjah teamed up to  to extinguish the fire.

Col Rashid Al Marri, Director of Operations, Sharjah Civil Defence, said: "We had to cut off electricity and gas to the entire neighbourhood to prevent an escalation, as the materials in the warehouses were highly inflammable."

Roads in the surrounding area causing traffic disruption.

Al Marri said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Damage caused by the fire could run into the millions, said Brig Marwan bin Afrah, Deputy Director of Sharjah Civil Defence.

"Although we have saved about 16 warehouses in the neighbourhood, the spread of excessive heat in most of these warehouses may well have affected the quality of some of the goods stored there," he said.
