The State of Kuwait, on behalf of the GCC States, has declared support for Malaysia's nomination for occupying the permanent Asian seat at the UN Security Council during 2015-2016.

The Kuwait News Agency, Kuna, quoted Alyaa Abdullah Al-Muzaini, the diplomatic attache of the permanent Kuwaiti mission at the UN, as expressing hope that the Malaysians would succeed in their bid to occupy the seat.

The Kuwaiti official, speaking on behalf of the member states of the six-seat Gulf Cooperation Council during the monthly meeting of the Asian Group, noted that the move would bolster the Council's quest for preserving international peace and security.

Elections for the Council seats are due to be held in October. Malaysia, if elected, will replace South Korea, membership of which expires at the year-end.
