Geo-address codes for all Dubai buildings

The time for locating an address via its closest landmark in the emirate will soon be a thing of the past as Dubai Municipality launches its new ‘Geo Address System’.

The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) department has rolled out this new navigation system, which will provide a code for every building in the emirate, which will facilitate finding any location via smartphones, iPads, computers and navigators.

This is especially usefully for those urgently looking for a hospital or other emergency services.

“No more waiting or confusion to identify any place, building, street or locality in Dubai if you use the new Geo-Address System developed by Dubai Municipality's Geographical Information Systems Department,” said Abdul Hakim Malik, Director of GIS Department in a statement.

The Geo-Address System has been a long time coming, being the goal of a project that aims at creating a national coordinate grid and system to enable everyone to find and reach any location in Dubai.

Malik said: “Although people use different navigators to find out places, mostly they have been directed to wrong direction due to confusion in name of location, spelling mistakes, difficulty in understanding the language of service provider or customer, etc.”

To tackle this problem and considering the rapid changes in localities due to several urban development projects, Dubai Municipality has adopted this system to exactly locate any place in the emirate.

Pasting a code on the website, Mylocation.ae, will help the user find the exact location of a building on an integrated city map.

“The department has so far numbered 130,000 entities in Dubai, hopefully the system will be fully launched by the end of 2014 once the numbering or entire buildings and locations completed,” Malik added.

Neighbourhoods on the geo-address codes will also include all the freezones and Hatta.

The project should roll out by end 2014.
