A goat named Zilzal (tremor) was sold for Dh200,000 at a Gulf sheep show held recently in the oasis town of Al Ain, the Arabic language newspaper Emarat Al Youm reported on Thursday.

More than 1,000 people participated in an auction that was held during the show, in which sheep owners from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman exhibited scores of their animals, it said.

The auction involved around 110 sheep and goats and fetched nearly Dh720,000, most of which were for rare livestock.

“Zilzal, aged around two years, fetched the highest price as it was sold for Dh200,000...it is one of the best sheep breeds as it belongs to the Najdi breed in Saudi Arabia,” the paper said.

Zilzal’s owner Sultan Al-Rashidi said he sold the goat to his friend Abdullah Al Nasiri, who himself gifted Zilzal to Sultan a day after the animal was born. Nasiri said he was determined to buy the goat although Rashidi offered it to him as a gift.

“I paid Dh200,000 for Zilzal because it is one of the best and rarest breeds…I am trying to diversify the breed of my male and female sheep,” Nasiri said. “Every one should now know that we in the UAE have started to export Najdi sheep after we were importing them.”
