Honour killing attempt in Sharjah

In a near-miss honour killing attempt, the husband slit his wife's throat and attempted taking his own life in their Sharjah residence as he suspected she was in a relationship.

Apparently the man was unhappy with the wife working late hours.

What started off as a minor squabble between the Pakistani couple soon turned bloody as the husband was not convinced of the woman's replies to why she returned late from work on that fateful evening. He picked up a knife and slit her throat and then stabbed himself in the stomach, according to a source.

"Two weeks back, on a Saturday, we heard screams from the apartment and rushed to find the couple lying in a pool of blood. The woman had injuries on her neck and the man was hurt as well," said a resident of the building. "We called a police ambulance and the couple was moved to hospital."

He loves his wife too much but suspected her sincerity towards him. That is the reason why he attempted killing her by slitting her throat, the watchman of the building quoted the man has saying.

The husband is still in police custody. They have reiterated their love to each other and promised to live together, added the watchman.

It was a rare incident in the building, said another resident.

The young couple had moved into the building near Pakistan Ghazi restaurant at Rolla Square eight months ago. They shared the apartment with an Indian family.

According to the UN, about 5,000 women and girls die in honour killings across the world every year.
