An Indian salesman ended his life just a day before leaving for home after cancelling his visa.

The man died instantly after he jumped from the fifth floor of a building in Jebel Ali and fell on a parked vehicle.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, a friend of the deceased said the young salesman was working for a mineral water company and he jumped from the building just a day before he was to return home after cancelling his visa.

“Vineeth Chandra Shekharan Nair, 32, came to UAE to work as a water salesman. His visa was stamped only recently (September 2012) and it seemed he was having mental depression. He was homesick and wanted to cancel his visa to return home to see his one-and-half-year-old daughter and wife,” said an Indian social worker, who helped repatriate his body.

“He was living in the company’s labour accommodation in Jebel Ali and on Thursday night (December 13, 2012) he committed suicide and his body was spotted the next day. He jumped from the fifth floor of the building, but landed on top of a vehicle, parked below,” said an official of the water company.

Hailing from Puthumala, In-Adoor, Pathanamthitta, Vineeth came to the UAE only six months ago and his visa was valid till 2014. “His visa was cancelled and he was supposed to travel back home. However, he chose to end his life,” said the social worker.  Jebel Ali Police have initiated an investigation into the death and the dead body was released and repatriated on Friday, December 14, 2012.

The numbers of suicides by distressed Indian nationals have been on the rise and the Jebel Ali incident is the latest in the series.

Last week, an Indian worker from Andhra Pradesh ended his life by hanging from the balcony of a building in the Al Khail Gate community of Al Quoz due to homesickness. In another incident earlier this month, an Indian committed suicide on driverless Dubai Metro track.

The Indian community associations, the embassy and consulate have launched several awareness campaigns and anti-suicide drives across the country against suicides for distressed and homesick labourers.
