This is the first time that Karan Pitani has ever been to Dubai, and it’s going to be a trip he’ll never forget.

The 21-year-old won 1-kilo of gold at the 20th edition of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) raffle draw.

“I have always heard such amazing things about Dubai, and was curious to see the place,” he told Emirates24|7.

In the emirate for a week’s holiday to witness the spectacular shopping festival, Karan was truly shocked when he got a call on Sunday informing him of the big win. “I just couldn’t believe it was true.”

Karan, who works in his family business in Gujarat, had shopped at Meena Jewellers. “I spent Dh2,000 on jewellery for my sister, who is getting married soon.” He had promptly filled out the coupons, and dropped it off into the box.

“Dubai is truly the land of dreams,” he adds.

Karan, who is scheduled to fly out tomorrow morning, is yet to claim his win. “I don’t know whether I need to postpone my ticket or not. My uncle, who runs a business here, said he would help me sort it all out.”

He is also confused about how much duty he would have to pay when he lands in India. “I still don’t know the exact amount, and I need to find out.” According to the Indian customs rule, men carrying gold worth INR50,000 (approximately Dh2,973.86) are exempted from customs duty.
