Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced an Emirati to one year in jail for setting fire to his lover's home after they rejected his marriage proposal.

AK, 19, was sentenced in absentia, reported 'Gulf News'.

Prosecutors accused the defendant of deliberate arson after setting fire to a gas bottle and throwing it into the kitchen of the Emirati family's house in Al Bidaa.

The 44-year-old Indian housewife (the mother of the Emirati girl to whom the defendant proposed) testified that the incident happened at 1am, according to the Prosecution sheet.

"My children and I were asleep when the incident happened… The accused lit up a bottle containing gas and threw it through the exhaust fan in the kitchen. A big fire started inside the kitchen and my children and I managed to put it out. When I walked out to the front yard I spotted the defendant running away. He looked at me and said ‘You see, I have set your house on fire… allow me to marry your daughter'," the mother said.

Prosecution records said the accused is a juvenile and the Emirati girl's family rejected his marriage proposal a number of times. Then he threatened to set fire to the house and husband of the housewife.

The defendant has a criminal record of similar crimes, according to prosecution records.
