This year Ramadan will fall during the last term of the academic year for most UAE schools.

To ensure the smooth functioning of the schools during the month, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), has set some guidelines for private schools in Dubai to follow, which include shorter school days, break times and food/eating policies to be observed.

“Dubai private schools are required to make a number of arrangements during Ramadan,” KHDA says in a statement sent out to schools.

“During Ramadan, it is understandably challenging for young Muslim students to continue their normal daily routines while fasting.

“Schools are expected to help Muslim students by applying the guidelines below; this will ensure students are able to meet academic expectations while fasting,” reads the statement.

“It is important that fasting students are supported to continue with normal school life.

“In order to accommodate their needs, the school should ensure that they do not engage in demanding physical activities and are not exposed to heat to reduce the risk of dehydration.”

“Out of respect for the holy month and for fasting students, staff and parents, eating and drinking should be prohibited in the public areas of the school, and should be limited to designated areas,” it further clarifies.

The changes also include shorter school days for all.

For this academic year, school hours during Ramadan will be from 8.30am to 1.30pm, with shorter breaks. This is applicable to all grade levels and for all students.

“Ramadan is a very significant time of the year for Muslims. It is the month of pious observance where values and cultural traditions play an important part.

“KHDA is inviting all private schools in Dubai to celebrate the significance of this month with all their students, shedding light on its meanings, expectations and importance for Dubai,” it elaborates.
