Maid complaints have dropped: Indian Embassy

There are fewer complaints regarding housemaid abuse in the UAE says the Indian Embassy.
According to senior officials complaints involving Indian maids has dropped drastically since the imposition of security deposit.
According to India’s Ambassador to the UAE M K Lokesh, the situation with regard to welfare of the maids has shown significant improvement, as only those who can afford to pay them on time and treat them well are the ones employing Indian maids.
“The improvement is also because of the strict policies being implemented by the Indian government and missions here.
Today, in order to bring a maid you have to pay a security deposit of Dh10,000 at the consulate, apart from Dh1100 minimum wage apart from mobile phone,” he said.
The measures were implemented in 2008 and ever since the number of complaints from maids who come through the legal channels has reduced. “But we do receive complaints from women entering the country on a visit visa and working as maids.
They cannot be controlled by us,” he added.
Last November the Embassy had set up a hotline number for distressed Indians in the UAE. Majority of the calls according to the number, were related to personal issues, such as application procedures for visa and passport and employment issues.
During the last four months the Indian Workers Resource Centre (IWRC) centre received nearly 7,000, of which about 1,137, were related to personal enquiries, 876 to employment matters, such as delayed and non-payment of salaries.
The IWRC also said that it would soon launch a toll free number 800 INDIA (80046342) to assist Indians in the UAE.
