The Emirates Authority for Standardisation & Metrology (Esma) is considering a resolution obliging all cars in the UAE to install fog lights on their vehicles, Emarat Al Youm has reported.
Mohammed Saleh Badri, Acting Director-General of Esma, told Emarat Al Youm that the step comes in light of increasing traffic accidents resulting from fog and bad weather.
He said currently GCC and UAE specifications related to the installation of fog lights in vehicles exist, but it is optional for drivers at this time.
He added that Esma is currently in coordination with the concerned authorities in the country to pass a resolution to make fog lights compulsory, if it was agreed to by the authorities.
Badri stressed the keenness to provide all solutions that ensure the safety of passengers, motorists and road-users so as to achieve traffic safety.
The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) was quoted in the report as stating that fog has become a climatic phenomenon.
The NCMS adds that the phenomenon starts mid-September and increases intensively during December and January.
