An Emirati father has filed a court suit demanding Dh1 million damages for the death of his 18-year-old son in a water well while trying to save a drowning 9-year-old boy.

Mohammed Al Yamahi said the court ordered the payment of Dh100,000 diya (blood money) and a Dh21,000 compensation two days ago but added that he had filed another suit demanding Dh1 million from the farm owner.

“There was negligence by the farm owner who dug that well and left it uncovered and failed to adhere to safety rules….my son sacrificed his life to save that boy and both of them died in the well,” he said, quoted by the Arabic language daily Al Bayan.

The paper said the incident took place in February when Sultan jumped into the well to rescue a drowning boy, adding that both died inside the well.

“Sultan’s elder brother jumped after them but found that both were dead…he then pulled their bodies out of the well,” it said.
