A trusting Dubai Customs employee who asked her colleagues to look after her cash drawer while she went to pray, allegedly had Dh1,000 stolen from the kitty.

MA, 23, clearance clerk at the Cargo Village office claims she had Dh3,430 in the cash drawer when she went to for noon prayer with her colleague MS. She asked other colleagues at the counter to look after the money.

As she was leaving, a customer approached her counter, so her colleague AAS asked her if her machine and the code were operating.

She answered affirmatively and asked him to be careful not to commit any mistake and to pay attention to her cash otherwise she will be held responsible, MA told the prosecution.

When she returned, she checked the cash and found that Dh1,000 were missing. Initially, she thought that her colleagues took the amount as a joke. She asked MS who was the only one at the counter, but MS told her he did not take any money.

MA asked MS to check with AAS on the phone. He also said he did not take any money.

The next day,  she personmally asked AAS and the latter assured to her he did not take any money. So she told him that she will complain to police.

She told her senior about what happened and the latter said he will check and manage the problem.

But MA was shocked as one of the seniors approached her and asked her to pay from her pocket the missing Dh1,000.

She refused and insisted to lodge a complaint with police on May 15.

Checking the cameras at the counter, police found out that AAS, 30, Emirati has opened the plaintiff’s drawer with his right hand that he had covered with an envelope he held with his left hand, testified Major Juma Salem Al Room, from Dubai Police.

AAS looked around to ensure that nobody was seeing him and immediately left MA’s desk, but has forgotten that there were cameras capturing him.

Confronted with the recording, AAS confessed before the police and the prosecution. The Court adjourned the case for verdict until October 6.
