An Indian expatriate in Ras Al Khaimah tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat after his girlfriend married another man at home, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old man got drunk and used a knife to slit his throat but was seen by friends and taken to hospital, where he was saved.

“This man arrived in hospital with a bleeding in his neck after his attempt to slaughter himself…his neck vein was slightly cut,” said Dr Rabei Mukhtar at Saqr Hospital, quoted by 'Emarat Al Youm' daily.

The paper said police would detain the man pending trial, adding that he could be either jailed for six months of fined Dh5,000 for attempted suicide.

The paper quoted the Indian, identified only as GS, as saying he had decided to kill himself because his girlfriend’s family refused to his request to marry him on the grounds he does not have enough money. “They forced her to marry a man who has money although I have known her for more than six years,” he said.
