Major Ali Abdullah Al Qaseeb Al Naqbi, Director of the Maritime Rescue Department at the Department of Transport and Rescue of Dubai Police, said maritime accidents claimed two lives as the department carried out 57 operations last year.
The month of May witnessed the biggest share of these accidents with 20 incidents.
Marine accidents and drownings are mainly due to victims flouting safety measures such as wearing life vests and protective helmets when driving jet skis and avoiding night swimming, said Major Al Naqbi.
He added that strict laws should be implemented with regard to those who refuse to comply with these measures.
Maj Al Naqbi explained that it is part of their duties to help when there is an injury or someone is drowning.
There are eight maritime rescue points across Dubai.
